Regulars of our blog know that our last review was slightly different from previous ones. The ECOAIMS training systems discussed there were designed for a specific segment—specifically, biathletes and modern pentathletes—and are rarely used by firearms owners. However, this experience allowed us to expand our understanding of laser simulators, and we decided to take a look behind the scenes at clay pigeon shooting, as five of its events are included in the Olympic Games. And if there's a popular sport, there are specialized simulators. We weren't mistaken, as there are indeed systems on the market designed exclusively for clay pigeon shooting training. Among them, the Swedish company TrueClays stands out, using high technology to bring the clay pigeon shooting range into your home. The system's developers prioritized realistic ballistics and motion physics, which, combined with highly detailed images, creates a truly immersive training experience. But it must be said that in the case of the TrueClays system, quality requires an expensive investment, but more on that in more detail.

Completeness

When it comes to the TrueClays system, saving money and using existing resources, such as components from a golf simulator, isn't an option. Despite the similarities in operation between training systems, which utilize the same projector and motion capture sensors, the TrueClays system features highly integrated components that eliminate even minor calculation errors, thus providing the end user with realism and millisecond-level accuracy. That's why the minimum basic system package will set you back $11,500. For this hefty price tag, you'll get a powerful gaming computer with software installed to properly operate the training system, a microphone, and two keyboards, one of which is unusually small and serves as the simulator's remote control.
The kit also includes a projection system that can display a highly realistic virtual target environment in up to 4K resolution. Incidentally, the familiar cameras for capturing the laser dot at the impact point are mounted on the bottom of the projector. As for the training weapon itself, given the specifics of clay pigeon shooting, you're invited to use your own 12-gauge shotgun, additionally outfitting it with a laser pointer, which must be placed in the barrel, and a special trigger mounted on the trigger guard, behind the trigger. This wired system functions as the trigger mechanism, and, using smart sensors similar in functionality to the MantisX equipment, it will track your entire aiming trajectory and subsequently adjust it, eliminating unnecessary movement. And of course, the highlight will be the software, with a wealth of training and practice programs for clay pigeon shooting, and a few for hunting. Naturally, for all this to work, a rather lengthy calibration procedure for the screen and your laser weapon is required.

Operating principle and exercises

To fully utilize the TrueClays shooting simulator's functionality, you'll need a clear space to display the projection. A projection screen or a flat, light-colored matte wall 3.5 to 5 meters wide and 2.5 to 3 meters high is recommended. The projection system and personal computer should be placed against this wall. For convenience, the manufacturer also includes a large tripod for those who can't mount the projection system to the ceiling. As mentioned earlier, you'll also need to upgrade your 12-gauge weapon to enable laser-guided shooting simulation. The shooting simulator allows you to practice skeet, trap, sporting clays, and spiral, which is a challenging discipline. TrueClays combines laser feedback with motion sensors to provide a virtual target environment. During aiming, sensors track the weapon's trajectory, while cameras record the laser spot at the impact point and instantly transmit detailed information to the control program. The software allows for a detailed analysis of each shot, down to determining the pellet's impact on the target, as well as analyzing your aiming trajectory. By simulating real-world shooting range conditions with the ability to adjust weather conditions, select ammunition type, and other parameters, and by regularly updating, TrueClays enables the most realistic and adaptive training in preparation for clay pigeon competitions.
