Basic safety rules for handling firearms

On our shooting simulator blog, we've been writing honest reviews of various training systems from around the world for several years now, and we think we've done a pretty good job of it. However, we often forget one important point: that real firearms often become a full-fledged part of a training system, as is the case with, for example, G-Sight or Strikeman systems, equipped only with a laser bullet. However, when handling any firearm, the number one priority is impeccable adherence to safety rules, as they are, by their very nature, tools that carry a potentially lethal threat. The vast majority of accidents are the direct result of someone ignoring these key rules. Such an accident begins with an accidental discharge, or, more accurately, an unintentional discharge. However, it is precisely this discharge that typically entails the most serious consequences for the person firing it, or worse, for those nearby. For this reason, anyone who handles firearms must thoroughly study the four fundamental rules for their safe use.

This principle forms the foundation of the entire safety culture. Even if you've personally and repeatedly checked your pistol and are absolutely certain it's empty, for example, during dry-fire drills, this rule still applies. The understanding that there are no "accidents," only unforgivable carelessness, only underscores the critical importance of this principle. Negligence in using such a deadly instrument can lead to irreparable consequences. I think there's no need to explain the meaning of the deliberately used word "deadly." Therefore, it's essential to reliably determine the weapon's condition by inspecting it each time it's used. Remove the magazine and return the slide to its rearmost position, locking it in place. Then, ensure there are no rounds in the chamber. Even after you've done all this, continue to follow the first rule, as we're talking about developing a vital habit.

Safe aiming isn't an abstract idea, but the result of discipline and responsibility. Whether you're at an outdoor shooting range, an indoor shooting range, or even on your own property, the muzzle of your gun shouldn't point at anything you don't intend to destroy. This requires constant awareness of your surroundings. Monitor the position of your gun with the utmost attention. It's no coincidence that in practical shooting competitions like IPSC, this aspect is given paramount importance, and the penalty for violating it is immediate disqualification. After all, practical shooting is the sport that most closely resembles the real-life conditions of using a combat weapon. Understanding the true nature of this strictness is inextricably linked to the following rule.

Emphasizing this element minimizes the risk of an accidental discharge. Even professional marksmen, who are equally skilled with a pistol even with a weaker hand, keep their finger off the trigger guard until the start of each competitive exercise. Also, when observing seasoned military personnel and law enforcement officers, one can notice that all their actions with the weapon, including its movement, are performed with the index finger extended along the receiver or bolt carrier. The firearm itself will not fire a shot, as this requires force, in the form of a pull on the trigger.

Aiming requires the utmost concentration, as it immediately precedes the shot. Therefore, complete awareness of your target, its line of fire, and, most importantly, its surroundings ensures that every successful shot, even the most unfortunate miss, is deliberate, justified, and, most importantly, does not cause harm to other objects or, even more terrifyingly, to people.

In addition to the fundamental rules described above, a number of related factors must be considered. Proper storage of weapons, their regular maintenance, and the use of personal protective equipment play a dominant role in the formation of a genuine system of values ​​and are the foundation of a social institution of social security. These rules, regardless of their formulation, serve a single purpose: to prevent tragedies and to foster a community of responsible firearms owners.
