But how do they train today, and do they use shooting simulators? To answer this question, we need to travel to Finland, where the small town of Ylämylly is home to the headquarters of ECOAIMS, a developer of high-precision laser pistols and rifles, including those needed for modern pentathlon competitions. The manufacturer has been around for over thirty years, dating back to 1990, and today supplies its products to more than 60 countries.

Naturally, most of ECOAIMS's products will differ from the training devices we're accustomed to reviewing, as the company produces laser targets and rifles for biathlon, including Paralympic biathlon. Optical sights for the visually impaired are also very popular. Among the vast selection of laser equipment in demand in sports circles, we were drawn to the P3EXP laser pistol, which is also the official licensed weapon for OCR competitions, also known as obstacle course racing. Incidentally, the P3EXP has a similar appearance to the legendary red SIRT training pistol, although unlike the pistol from NextLevel Training, the P3EXP laser trainer is completely painted.
The pistol is equipped with a battery located under a removable rail, which allows you to mount accessories such as a red dot sight. We were also interested in the LT50EXP and LT600EXP laser target identification devices, the latter of which can also be used via a smartphone app. They are similar in functionality to the Accurize Shooting System targets, but have a number of significant differences. All ECOAIMS products are available for purchase individually or as part of training kits, though these are quite expensive.
Operating principleThe operating principle is extremely simple: you simply place the selected target opposite your shooting position at a distance of 8-10 meters. When you pull the trigger, the pistol projects a laser spot at the impact point. The trigger pull is initially quite heavy, but it can be adjusted slightly. You can also zero the laser, adjusting its accuracy, just like with a real gun. As for the ECOAIMS targets, they are true masterpieces of high-precision engineering. The LT50EXP and LT600EXP targets essentially function as high-speed infrared cameras that continuously monitor changes on their surface. A special filter and intelligent algorithms help the targets distinguish your laser flash from any other light sources, allowing them to be used even outdoors in sunlight. For a more in-depth analysis of your shots, you can use the LT600PRO target with a smartphone app. After determining the impact location, the app calculates its precise coordinates by comparing the positions of the illuminated pixels on the target's matrix and sends data to your smartphone about your performance in the training or competition exercise. The target connects to the app via Bluetooth. |
Interaction with other training systems
If you already own a P3EXP laser pistol, you can also use it for dry fire training with any shooting simulator or mobile shooting app, such as iShooter. Using the P3EXP with the iShooter shooting app will add over 80 target types to your regular training sessions for military, police, IPSC, and USPSA shooters, and most importantly, it will give you access to the specially designed exercises included in the kit. All targets are printable from the app and require no additional costs.
